Adriaan Visser (51) has been the alderman responsible for Finance, City Centre, Culture and Sports since May 2014. Since September 2015 he has been responsible for Finance, Organisation, Harbour, City Centre and Sports.
He grew up in Rotterdam in a liberal-conservative family, and he lived there until he went to university. Adriaan studied public administration in Leiden, the Netherlands, but he completed his main subject (economics) at Erasmus University Rotterdam.
In the 1990s, he worked with the National Investment bank, where he assessed business plans, prepared, among other things, the privatization of 8 municipal transport companies, and investigated Fokker’s relaunch.
Adriaan’s heart always lay in Rotterdam, and after some wanderings, he finally settled there in 2002. At the time, he worked on several projects and assignments from the Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management through Twynstra Gudde. As a project leader, he was responsible for the Mainport Corridor South Project, the Rotterdam Mainport development Project (Maasvlakte 2), the auction of commercial radio frequencies and the market operation and exploitation of goods transport by rail.
In 2006, Adriaan joined the Municipality of Rotterdam as director of what then still was called the Rotterdam Development Corporation then. Partly at his initiative, the Development Agency (OBR), Municipal Housing Agency (DS+V), and the Engineering Agency were merged into the Urban Development cluster.
In 2011, he became Economy and Labour Market programme director. Adriaan was the figurehead for this programme and served as the first point of contact for entrepreneurs, investors and collaboration partners.
In 2012, his agreed term of service (4+2 years) as director with the Municipality expired and Adriaan started as director of Platform 31. Platform 31 is a city and region knowledge organisation. The organisation is involved in urban development and pays special attention to the link between spatio-economic and socio-economic development.
Adriaan has two teenage children ; a son and a daughter. In his leisure time, he likes to make use of the wide variety of culture and sports offerings in Rotterdam.
