Walter de Vries works as urban planner for the city of Rotterdam. After his study at the technical university of Delft, he worked for a privat urban planning office and for the province of South Holland. Beside his work for Rotterdam, he is lecturer regional planning at the University for Applied Science of Rotterdam. In his work for the city of Rotterdam, he is especially involved in topics related to the relationship between city and port, like the redevelopment of old harbour area’s (www.stadshavensrotterdam.nl) or the improvement of spatial condition for the renewal of the port economy. Beside that, he is program manager for The River as Tidel Park, a cooperation of ten parties in the region of Rotterdam, like the Port Authority, WWF, municipalities and water conservancies. This cooperation tries to realise several tidal parks, both within and outside the central urban area, to improve recreational and natural quality and to contribute to watersafety in the open delta of Rotterdam (www.rotterdam.nl/getijdenpark).
